The Difference between Medication Treatment of Children’s Allergies and Adult’s

The treatment for allergies of children can slightly vary from medication treatment for adults.  Most prescription medications for kids are the same for adults and older children like Allegra, Clarinex, and Zyrtec. Here are the common differences between the treatment of children's allergies and of adults:

  • DELIVERY.The slight difference normally is found in the forms of drugs or the delivery system of the medication. Adults can take their medicine through the various forms available today that include pills, tablets, capsules, intravenous fluids, nasal sprays, and allergy shots. While the content of the drugs themselves will be the same, the medication for kids may need extra care and caution to administer. In addition, choices are a little more limited for younger children, especially infants. There are drugs, for example, Clarinex and Zyrtec that are available in syrup form. They can be taken by children of over 6 months old.  Some drugs are designed to be appealing for kids like the chewable tablet versions of Claritin approved for children of over 2 years and above. Orally disintegrating tablets are designed for kids who cannot swallow pills.
  • DOSAGE. Obviously, medication for younger children is given in relatively lower doses compared to adults. The frequency of medicine intake can also vary depending on the severity of the symptoms.
