Are Allergy Eye Drops Safe?

There are many types of allergy eye drops depending on the chemicals or medications used. These topical eye drops can usually be purchased as over-the-counter drugs, except for some of them that require a doctor's prescription. These three types of topical eye drops are:

  • Topical antihistamines & decongestants.  This type of eye drop works by blocking histamine receptors in the conjuctiva. This process prevents histamine from binding to conjunctiva and unleashing the discomforts. While this type is highly effective is stopping the itching of the area affected, it cannot treat the swelling and redness of the eyes.

  • Topical mast-cell stabilizers. This type can be used for all types of eye allergies, whatever the causing agent or allergen is. One major disadvantage it has compared with other types is its need to be applied at least 4 times a day. It can also take a while for it to take effect.
  • Topical anti-inflammatory drugs. This type is useful in the treatment of itchy eyes. It can also reduce the redness of the eyes and the swelling. This is not normally recommended at the onset of the allergy, but is reserved for more severe allergic reaction. It can cause a serious side effect if taken for a long time so an ophthalmologist’s supervision is needed.

The different types of allergy eye drops are normally safe and easy to use. Both, topical antihistamines and decongestants, and topical mast cell-stabilizers can even be used without doctor's supervision.
