The Side Effects of Allergy Medication for Children

The side effects from treatment of children's allergies are relatively less severe compared to the side effects of adult medication. This is due to the amount of medication a child normally take and the frequency of the medicine intake itself. The course of treatment medication for children is shorter and normally involves a lesser variety of drugs. Here is the list of some of the common side effects from allergy medications.

  • Extreme drowsiness. First-generation antihistamines are normally effective for kids but they cause sleepiness for your kid. Never give antihistamines and decongestants to your kid when he goes to school. This can definitely affect his performance. Sleepiness in the classroom may be interpreted as laziness which can create bad impression for everybody. Consult your doctor what medicines are good for your kids at school.
  • Degrade thinking and learning. Antihistamines are believed to impact negatively the thinking and learning processes of children. Studies have shown that, while kids feel better after taking antihistamines, their learning abilities are worse than those taking no treatment. Your kid is better off suffering from congestion than drugged. You do not want to blunt the learning abilities of your developing kid.
  • Increased blood pressure. This side effect does not cause much concern for children since they normally have a strong heart and a healthy body. However, you still want to make sure. Always consult your child's doctor before you allow your kid to take allergy medication.
