Safe Medications for Children’s Allergies |
There are many kinds of safe medications that can be safely taken by children and infants. The most common allergy affecting younger kids is hay fever or allergic rhinitis. Thankfully, most prescription drugs for adults also works great with infants and children. The common medications to treat the symptoms of allergic rhinitis are antihistamines, decongestants, and steroids. If symptoms are moderate you can even use over-the-counter medications as needed. Avoid giving your kids topical decongestants like Afrin to kids when they go to school because usage of this drug for more than 3-5 days at a time can cause extreme drowsiness that may result in poor performance. Prescription allergy medications such as the non-sedating antihistamines that include Allegra, Claritin, Zyrtec, and Clarinex are now highly recommended by most doctors. You can also use topical steroids like Flonase, Nasonex, and Nasacort for the same effectiveness. Medication for allergies for kids needs to be taken regularly every day to be effective. They should not be used only during times when your kid is suffering the symptoms. Always consult your kid's doctor before buying any over-the-counter medication for your kid to be on the safe side. Prescription drugs normally are more effective if there are adverse allergic reactions. |
