What Can Eyebright Do For Allergies?

Eyebright is a weed that grows in fields and meadow areas of most temperate regions. It is a parasitic plant that relies on other plants for nutrition. It has violet, white, pink or purple flowers with purple lines or yellow dots on them. Eyebright has been used to treat conditions of the respiratory tract, like bronchitis, allergies, colds and sinusitis.
Allergies usually occur in the form of hay fever, which shows up as a runny nose, excessive sneezing, irritation of the eyes and mucous membranes, and a persistent cough. This, even though it is not infectious or fatal, can be very uncomfortable for the person suffering from it.
Eyebright contains astringent compounds known as tannins that may help to tighten the top layers of the mucous membranes, reducing mucous secretion, which in turn relieves irritation. The flavodnoids in eyebright act as anti-inflammatory agents that relieve the inflamed mucous membranes of the eyes, sinuses and upper respiratory tract. It also has a cleansing action on the liver and helps eliminate toxins from the blood supply. Besides relieving the symptoms from within, it can also be used as eyewash to treat the inflammation and irritation in the eyes.
Eyebright may cause side effects like nausea and sweating. It should be used only after proper consultation with a qualified physician.
