Drug Interactions with Leukotriene Inhibitors

Montelukast (Singulair), zafirlukast (Accolate), and zileuton (Zyflo) are the common forms of leukotriene inhibitors today. Montelukast and zafirlukast prevent leukotriene from attaching to cell receptors that can result to chemical chain of events in an asthma attack or allergic reaction.  These drugs can also be used to treat seasonal allergies. Zafirlukast and zileuton are used to treat chronic asthma in both adolescents and adults.

These drugs, while effective in the treatment of both, allergies and asthma, can affect other drugs. Some drugs that may interact with montelukast are:

  • NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
  • Aspirin
  • Phenobarbital
  • Rifampin

People who are taking asthma medication theophyline and blood thinner warfarin should not take zafirlukast and zileuton.

Some medications that may interact with zafirlukast include:

  • Aspirin
  • Blood pressure medications
  • Seizure medications

For zilueton, some medications that may affect it include:

  • Beta-agonists
  • Propanolol
  • Terfenadine (Seldane and others)

You must exercise proper caution when taking other drugs, any drugs. Always consult your doctor if you can take certain drugs together with leukotriene inhibitors. Tell your doctor if you are also taking other supplements--vitamins and minerals, and herbal products. This is an important consideration especially if you have an ongoing asthma attack or allergic reactions.
