The Reason Why Leukotriene Inhibitors are Used for Allergies

Leukotriene Inhibitors is a type of drug designed to fight asthma and allergy. While it was initially designed to improve the lung condition of asthmatics, it surprisingly provided fast relief for seasonal allergy or allergic rhinitis. It is leukotriene inhibitor’s job to prevent the activity of leukotriene-- a chemical produced by cells during allergic reactions and asthma attacks.

Synthesized in response to many triggers such as receptor activation, antigen-antibody interaction, and other cellular level interactions during allergy flare-ups, leukotriene inhibitors have proven to be an effective counter to severe allergic reactions. These drugs can stimulate the smooth muscles in the airways to allow more air passage during asthma attacks and nasal congestion. Leukotriene inhibitors can also dramatically decrease the symptoms of seasonal allergies. They can also relieve nasal congestion better than antihistamines, the common anti-allergy drugs, although they are less effective compared to corticosteroid nasal sprays.  Some doctors would therefore recommend that this drug should be taken together with either antihistamine or nasal spray to have a more effective medicinal treatment.
