Chamomile as a Potential Cause for Allergy

Chamomile has been recognized as an effective medicinal plant for thousands of years. It has seen widespread use in Europe. It helps treat several ailments such as anxiety, digestion or intestinal conditions, skin infections/inflammation (eczema), sleep disorders, infantile colic, wound healing, teething pains, and even diaper rash. In the United States, this plant has been known to be a good tea ingredient for its mildly sedating effects. There are two major types of chamomile that are used for treatment of health conditions: Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile), German chamomile (Matricaria recutita). They have similar effects on the body when used as treatment although some people believe German chamomile is stronger.

Good as it may sound, this gentle plant has been reported to cause allergic reactions that can range from mild to severe such as anaphylaxis. People who are allergic to ragweed are not advised to consume chamomile tea unless advised by a health professional. Chamomile is related to ragweed so it is highly possible that it cause the same symptoms just like what you get from ragweed. Individuals who are taking blood thinners should not chamomile tea either. If you notice any reactions in your body after consuming chamomile tea, be sure to consult your doctor about it.
